What is Canine Cognitive Dysfunction ("Doggy Dementia")?
Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) is the canine equivalent of Alzheimer's disease and affects roughly a third of dogs aged 11–12 and up to two-thirds of dogs 15+. Owners often chalk it up to 'just getting old', but early recognition allows interventions that meaningfully slow progression.
Common signs and symptoms
Signs vary between dogs and can be subtle at first. Watch for the following, especially if several appear together or persist for more than a few days:
- Disorientation: getting stuck in corners, forgetting familiar routes
- Altered interactions: less interested in greeting family, or newly clingy
- Sleep-wake cycle changes: sleeping all day, pacing at night
- House-soiling in a previously trained dog
- Activity changes: aimless wandering, staring at walls
- Anxiety: newly nervous, easily startled
Risk factors
Certain dogs are more predisposed. Understanding risk helps you screen earlier and act sooner.
- Age 9+ (increases sharply with each year)
- Small breeds live longer and are diagnosed more often
- Sensory loss (vision, hearing) accelerates confusion

- Seek urgent care if: sudden dramatic change, seizures, or head-pressing — those need workup for other neurological disease.
Diagnosis and management
Diagnosis is clinical, after ruling out pain, sensory loss, and endocrine disease. Management combines: (1) daily mental enrichment (puzzle feeders, new short walks), (2) diets high in medium-chain triglycerides and antioxidants, (3) supplements like SAMe and omega-3s, (4) selegiline (Anipryl) in appropriate cases, (5) predictable routines and night lights. Environmental consistency helps enormously.
